Movie Review - Alien: Romulus – A Fresh Take or a Familiar Tune?
Alien: Romulus brings us back to the eerie, dark world that the franchise is famous for. Set years after the original Alien, the film follows a group of young miners desperate to escape their bleak lives. They plan to steal cryochambers from an abandoned Weyland-Yutani vessel, but soon find themselves face-to-face with the terrifying creatures that haunt this universe.
Director Fede Álvarez, known for Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, does a good job recreating the classic Alien feel. The movie looks fantastic, with retro-futuristic designs that remind us of the 1970s vision of space. But don’t be fooled by the familiar setting. there is plenty of new horror waiting in the shadows.
The characters, led by Cailee Spaeny as Rain and David Jonsson as Andy, are compelling. Their mission is intense, and the ticking clock adds to the tension. However, as they delve deeper into the space station, the stakes rise, and the line between survival and disaster blurs.
The film is packed with references to previous Alien movies, which might be a treat for hardcore fans. But at times, these nods to the past can feel a bit too much, pulling you out of the story. While the movie starts strong, some viewers might feel it leans too heavily on the legacy of the franchise, especially in the final act.
Alien: Romulus is a mixed bag. It brings back the fear and suspense that made the original movies great, but it also risks being overshadowed by its own homage to the past. If you're a fan of the series, this one is worth checking out—but be prepared for a journey that might feel more familiar than fresh.
